Scholarship Opportunities Information for the 2022-2023 Academic Year

Annual Applications for College of Letters & Science Scholarships
(L&S students only, award range: $500 – $5,000)
Over 150 scholarships are awarded each cycle. Currently enrolled first year students and currently enrolled sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 who plan to enroll for the 2023-2024 year can apply for a variety of scholarships by completing one application. Successful applicants demonstrate strength in 2-3 of the following areas: academic excellence, service, leadership, diversity, creative accomplishment, or strength of character. Many scholarships also require financial need as determined by a completed FAFSA on file with UW-Madison. Essays, activity/involvement records, transcripts are required. Awarded scholarships are paid out in Fall 2023/Spring 2024.

Tommy Thompson Leadership Scholarship
(Campuswide, $2,300)
The Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership offers one scholarship award of $2,300 to one student per academic year. Scholarships are intended for undergraduates who have shown public leadership in their lives in a way that reflects the general legacy of Governor Tommy G. Thompson. Governor Thompson was a broad thinker who offered common sense solutions to tackle big problems through teamwork and an unending zeal to make our state a better place. We seek high quality applicants who reflect Tommy’s spirit, have demonstrated leadership during their time in college, and will continue to lead in the future. Awards are distributed in the spring 2023 term.
The Tommy Thompson Center is a statewide center and UW campuses from all over the state forward up to three finalists to the Center. Last year, one UW-Madison finalist was awarded.

The Wolff Fellows Award
$45,000
(L&S, May 2023 graduates only, 3.75 minimum GPA required at time of application)
Nominations Open: September 9, 2022 – October 15, 2022
Application Period: October 24, 2022 – January 23, 2023
The Wolff Fellows program provides an award of approximately $45,000 to an outstanding graduating senior for a year-long travel, service or study-abroad experience. Letters & Science graduates will be empowered to take on a year of travel and service as part of a new fellowship opportunity, made possible by a generous gift from Paul Martin Wolff and Rhea S. Schwartz. Eligible May 2023 graduating seniors must demonstrate not only a proven record of service to the University and community but also outstanding academic performance.
Eligibility for this award includes: Letters & Science undergraduate degree candidates (for Spring 2023) who have attended UW-Madison for the entirety of their undergraduate careers with a minimum 3.75 cumulative GPA (at the time of application) who have distinguished themselves by demonstrated academic achievement, service to the University and service to the greater world community. Transfer students are ineligible for this opportunity.

Richard Ralph Winter Phoenix Rising Humanitarian Scholarship
(L&S only, up to $5,000)
This scholarship rewards humanitarian achievement and service, encourages excellence and commitment in the application of humanitarian ideals, and affirms the moral obligation to provide for human welfare. Eligible students must be second or third year students and have a strong record of community/humanitarian service. Recommendations are required from those selected as finalist. Finalists are required to participate in an individual interview. Awards are paid out in Fall 2023/Spring 2024.
This scholarship is made available by the generosity of Charles Manthey Winter and the Richard Ralph Winter Rising Phoenix Humanitarian Scholarship.
Application Period: November 17, 2022 – January 18, 2023
2023 Liberal Arts Essay Competition
(any school or college, up to $1,500)
This annual competition requires submission of an essay on a different topic each year related to the liberal arts. A prize payment is awarded to the winning entry and runner-up. Eligible applicants must be enrolled undergraduates from any school or college who have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average. Awards are paid out in Spring 2023. Must be enrolled in the Spring 2023 term to apply.

Mathea Helen and Lawless Louis Mollere Pre-Medicine Scholarship
(L&S only, up to $10,000)
This scholarship supports an aspiring physician junior or senior from the College of Letters & Science with financial need pursuing medical school. Applicants must be 2nd or 3rd year students at the time of application, have excellent academic records with evidence of progress in pre-med course work and service to the campus and/or Madison community. There is a preference for students who demonstrate breadth in the liberal arts outside of the biological sciences with donor preference for recipients who do not smoke or use alcohol or drugs. The scholarship is paid out in Fall 2023/Spring 2024. Recommendations are required.

Ginsburg Family Undergraduate Excellence Award
(L&S only, $1,000)
This award for leadership, service and scholarship recognizes juniors or seniors who have made outstanding leadership and service contributions to the University and/or the surrounding communities while maintaining a record of academic excellence (minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA). Essays, transcripts, and recommendations are required. Awards are paid out in Spring 2023. Only candidates with an exemplary record of leadership and service are considered.

Troxell-Glicksman Awards
(any school or college, varies from $200 – $1,500)
This scholarship recognizes extraordinary junior or senior self-identified women whose qualifications include exceptional intellectual ability, curiosity, citizenry and engagement in global society. Candidates are invited to submit application materials after nomination by UW faculty and staff. Finalists are required to participate in an interview. Awards are paid out in Spring 2023. Paul R. Ebling Pre-Medicine Scholarship
(any school or college, up to $5,000)
This scholarship supports an aspiring physician committed to attend the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. Recipients must be Wisconsin high school graduates, current UW graduating seniors, have excellent academic records with evidence of progress in pre-med course work and service to the campus and/or Madison community. Demonstration of reasonable progress towards admission at UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health for the next academic year is required. Recommendations are required. Awards are paid out in Spring 2023.

L&S Lawton Grant
Letters & Science underrepresented Wisconsin resident students with financial need can apply and receive up to $3,000 per year. Must be in the process of earning 24 credits per academic year and be in good academic standing. Must be planning to enroll for fall 2023.
