Scholarship Opportunities Information for the 2021 Academic Year

Tommy G. Thompson Leadership Scholarship
(any school or college, up to $2,300)
This scholarship recognizes undergraduates who have exemplified public leadership in their lives in a way that reflects the general legacy of Governor Tommy G. Thompson. Awardees will be academically excellent, demonstrate leadership during their college experience with plans to continue to lead in the future and reflect Governor Tommy Thompson’s spirit.

Annual Application for College of Letters & Science Scholarships
All continuing students currently enrolled who plan to enroll for the 2022-2023 Academic Year
(L&S only, $500 – $3,500)
Over 100 scholarships are awarded each cycle. Current first year students and current sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 and who plan to enroll for the 2020-2021 year can apply for a variety of scholarships. Applicants must demonstrate strength in 2-3 of the following areas: academic excellence, service, leadership, diversity, creative accomplishment, or strength of character. Many scholarships also require financial need. Students apply using one application and are considered for all opportunities. Essays, activity/involvement records, transcripts, and a recommendation are required.

Richard Ralph Winter Phoenix Rising Humanitarian Scholarship
(L&S only, up to $5,000)
This scholarship rewards humanitarian achievement and service, encourages excellence and commitment in the application of humanitarian ideals, and affirms the moral obligation to provide for human welfare. Eligible students must be second or third year students and have a strong record of community/humanitarian service. Recommendations are required. Finalists are required to participate in an individual interview.
This scholarship is made available by the generosity of Charles Manthey Winter and the Richard Ralph Winter Rising Phoenix Humanitarian Scholarship.

Mathea Helen and Lawless Louis Mollere Pre-Medicine Scholarship
(L&S only, up to $10,000)
This scholarship supports an aspiring physician junior or senior from the College of Letters & Science with financial need pursuing medical school. Applicants must be 2nd or 3rd year students at the time of application, have excellent academic records with evidence of progress in pre-med course work and service to the campus and/or Madison community. There is a preference for students who demonstrate breadth in the liberal arts outside of the biological sciences. The donor prefers that the recipients do not smoke or use alcohol or drugs. Recommendations are required.

Ginsburg Family Undergraduate Excellence Award
(L&S only, $1,000)
This award (formerly known as the Meyerhoff award) for leadership, service and scholarship recognizes juniors or seniors who have made outstanding leadership and service contributions to the University and/or the surrounding communities while maintaining a record of academic excellence. Only candidates with an exemplary record of leadership and service will be considered.
- Application Period: February 4, 2022-March 11, 2022
(any school or college, varies from $200 – $1,500)
This scholarship recognizes extraordinary junior or senior women whose qualifications include exceptional intellectual ability, curiosity, citizenry and engagement in global society. Candidates are invited to submit application materials after nomination by UW faculty and staff. Finalists are required to participate in a group individual interview. Paul R. Ebling Scholarship Pre-Medicine Scholarship
(any school or college, up to $5,000)
This scholarship supports an aspiring physician committed to attend the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. Recipients must be Wisconsin high school graduates, current UW graduating seniors, have excellent academic records with evidence of progress in pre-med course work and service to the campus and/or Madison community. Demonstration of reasonable progress towards admission at UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health for the next academic year is required. Recommendations are required.
- Application Period: January 11, 2022 – February 20, 2022
2021 Liberal Arts Essay Competition
(any school or college, up to $1,500)
This annual competition requires submission of an essay on a different topic each year related to the liberal arts. A prize payment is awarded to the winning entry and runner-up. Eligible applicants must be enrolled undergraduates from any school or college who have a minimum cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
- Application Period: December 6, 2021 – March 4, 2022
Letters & Science Scholarships–
Incoming Admitted Freshmen for 2022-2023 Academic Year ($500 to $10,000)
In general about 100 scholarships are available for Wisconsin resident incoming freshmen students. These range from smaller amounts meant to recognize both outstanding academic achievement and service/leadership of students to larger awards that offset financial need and recruit talent to the College of Letters & Science. Academic potential and accomplishment, socio-economic status, geographic diversity, rural background, first-generation status, under-represented populations, and unique talents or academic interests are considerations for awarding scholarships.
- No application required. Candidates are selected based on admissions and financial aid application content. Offers are extended for early application cycle beginning February 1st; for Regular Admissions Cycle beginning April 1st . Scholarships for non-residents are extremely limited.
Roberto Sánchez Scholarship
Transfer Admitted First-Year Students for 2022-2023 Academic Year (up to $10,000)
This scholarship supports up to 2 transfer students each year for 2 years. Applicants must be Hispanic, bilingual and the first generation in their families to attend a 4-year institution and earn a degree. There is a preference for students transferring from 2-year institutions who are current Sánchez Scholars from Madison College or MMSD. However students from other institutions are welcome to apply.
